Is sending a present for Peter Rabbit. Don't open until Christmas! Will send books for Mary Virginia as soon as she and Miss Lewis (with whom she is partners in housekeeping) have read them. Found these nice children's books from England in a local book shop. Willie [Stout #144]
A picture of New England children with pumpkins. Isabelle helping her fix up her house [?]. Aunt Willie [Stout #164]
Mrs. McClung had a relapse on Saturday that seems serious. Has been taking refuge in Michelet; just finished the third volume. Recommends Richard Wagner's autobiography; it is so honest and direct. W. S. C. [Stout #219]
Has not succeeded in getting Outlook to commit to a publication date for her article. Would she please edit the French in Pioneers? So glad she likes it. Understands she would like a more distinct structure, but that wouldn't suit the country. Mr. Greenslet likes it. Still, wishes to do something different. Would like to be able to write what is in Fremstad's mind. Saw her after she had sung Kundry in Parsifal [ Wagner ] yesterday, and she looked exhausted. Isabelle is visiting. Misses her. W [Stout #257]
Sending this note to Grandmother to keep for her. Recently a guest brought a marionette that walked in beside him and was so funny. Wanted a cigarette and fell down and sobbed when she said he was too young to smoke. Kissed her hand on the way out. Few real men are so charming. Has been going to operas with Zoë Akins. On Valentine's Day the apartment looked like a florist's shop. Aunt Willie [Stout #498]
When is she sending the nice bookends? Will spend Thanksgiving in Boston with Mary Virginia. Willa [Stout #753]
Has had an attack of neuritis and will have to cancel Thanksgiving plans. Unfortunately, active writing brings on these attacks. Does hope to come see Mary Virginia [at Smith College] some time this winter. Willa Cather [Stout #755]
Appreciated message from the ship and hopes she is enjoying Paris. Leaves for Bowdoin College tomorrow to give an address, then on to Mary Jewett's house in South Berwick, Maine. Then to Wellesley, Massachusetts, to visit Mary Virginia [where she attended Dana Hall]. Leaves for Arizona May 30. Is about halfway through proofs. Willa [Stout #782]
